Yusuf Randera-Rees founded a very innovative investment organization in Africa called Awethu, meaning “Our Project.” With USD$16M under management, this six year old fund is built on the premise that talent exists throughout and must be enabled to thrive in the formal sector. With over 500 companies incubated since 2009, Yusuf believes entrepreneurs will close the inequality gap by taking leaders from the informal to formal sector. While some of the businesses do fail, his philosophy works as he enables many entrepreneurs to move from ideation to minimum viable product level to autonomous businesses in 13-24 months. Yusuf grew up in a mixed-race family (Indian-Welsh) in Johannesburg, and went to Harvard and Oxford. He worked at Credit Suisse in volatility trading in New York and Zurich before moving back to South Africa.
