“Thanks to this Award, Vula is breaking down health barriers in isolated areas. Before winning the 2015 Award, my diagnostic-eye-disease app supported 1 medical specialty with 112 doctors treating 1500 patients. Now, we have scaled to 6 specialties, 97 specialists, 792 health workers, and 2200 referrals generated.  We also achieved our secure database and an easy to use billing system with this Award and ongoing mentoring. My hope – my next step of my journey – is to revolutionize diagnostics, and subsequently treatment, for all Africans.”

William Maphem sees a large vision for Africa. The entrepreneur and founder of Vula Mobile believes that his business will revolutionize medical diagnostics and treatment, for all Africans. Since winning the 2015 African Entrepreneurship Award, the South African doctor’s vision is quickly becoming a reality.

Increases in Medical Expertise and Customers

Initially William launched Vula Mobile with just a few doctors and one specialty. Eyes. Before the 2015 African Entrepreneurship Award, Vula had 1 medical specialty with 112 doctors treating 1500 patients. Now, with the Award for Uncharted and year-long mentoring, Vula Mobile scaled to 6 specialties, 97 specialists, 792 health workers, and 2200 referrals generated.

Secure Database for Secure Records

With careful scaling, William ensures that Vula Mobile takes care of logistics. In addition to increased diagnostic capabilities, Vula Mobile’s value add is efficient and secure storage of patient records. In much of Africa, paper records are lost or incomplete. With a digital platform, records are readily available, organized, and accessible to patients and doctors. Vula Mobile facilities this with a secure database and an easy to use billing system.

Downloaded as a smart phone app, Vula Mobile allows health-care practitioners to conduct basic medical diagnostics, before generating patient referrals.  William says that “Inefficient referral networks are a drain on resources. We’re hoping that by applying mobile technologies to this issue, Vula Mobile can play a part in improving the way referrals are made and creating more robust health systems.” The app streamlines a previously clumsy system that left many in need. Patient records can easily be sent to doctors and securely stored in a database.

A Big Vision for Africa

William and Vula Mobile are not content to just bring their project to South Africans, but are now on a journey to scale into the rest of Africa.
